The mainstream approach to establishing conﬁdence in identity online for many years has been data-centric methods that rely on checking user-entered personally identiﬁable information (PII) against static sources.
While these methods may offer evidence that a real-world identity exists, they offer no assurance that the person who can legitimately claim the identity is genuinely present in the online interaction.
